Debian on IRC

When I can afford it I am online on various IRC channels where people can reach and bop me. Usually, messages sent to me get delivered via mail if I don't pay enough attention. The nickname is usually Joey or Joey[tm] if the first one is in use by somebody else.

Since I don't believe that a nick name belongs to a person and should be enforced, I don't maintain a nickserv to kick people off of irc who are not me. Instead, when somebody else joins with the same nickname and is faster than myself, I'll take the backup. The nickname is registered, though, but only because otherwise somebody else would register it and play dirty things with it. This way, it can be used freely but it cannot be used to kick other users out of the network.

IRCnet

On IRCnet I'm usually in #Debian.DE (and #LinuxTag around LinuxTag). This is the preferred network for various stuff. Some servers are:

  • irc.fu-berlin.de
  • irc.netsurf.de
  • irc.freenet.de

OFTC - Open and Free Technology Community

On OFTC I'm usually in #Debian.DE and #debian-devel. This network is normally used for high-level and development stuff. If you want to get in touch with me with regards to Debian stuff, this would be the network to use. Some servers are:

  • irc.oftc.net
  • irc.eu.oftc.net
  • irc.uk.oftc.net

SpamNode

This network was called OpenProjetsNetwork (OPN) before, but abused by Rob 'lilo' Levin for personal and non-personal spam and renamed into freenode (official name). I normally don't pay much attention on this network. Please use OFTC instead. Some servers are:

  • irc.freenode.net
  • irc.debian.org
